We often hear these popular sayings in today's culture:

  • "Follow Your Heart"

  • "YOLO - You Only Live Once"

  • "I'm Living my Best Life"

Let's take a moment to examine these sayings against the Word of God to determine if they are scriptural.

"Follow Your Heart"

Jeremiah 17:9-10 AMP

v9 - The heart is deceitful above all things and it is extremely sick; Who can understand it fully and know its secret motives?

v10 - I, the Lord, search and examine the mind, I test the heart, To give to each man according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds.

So what does this mean?

Your heart will cause you to make decisions that can lead to pain, disappointment, depression, loneliness, hate and vengeance. Even when we feel that a decision is harmless or may even feel good at the moment, there's always a secret motive behind our actions. This is why it's not wise to follow it even if we think it's the right thing to do.

"YOLO - You Only Live Once"

1 John 2:15-16 AMP

v15 - Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in Him.

v16 - For all that is in the world - the lust and sensual craving of the flesh and the lust and longing of the eyes and the boastful pride of life [pretentious confidence in one's resources or in the stability of earthly things] - these do not come from the Father, but are from the world.

When you use YOLO as justification to exalt the things that are in the world above the things that are of God, it is not possible to have the love of the Father in you. Boasting in our resources and material things puts us at risk of developing pride in our hearts.

Jesus also says the following in Mark 7:20-23 NLT,

v20 And then he added, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you.

v21 For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder,

v22adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness.

v23All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.”

"I'm Living My Best Life"

Matthew 16:26-27 AMP

v26 - For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world [wealth, fame, success], but forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

v27 - For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory and majesty of His Father with His angels, and then He will repay each one in accordance with what he has done.

Although we may have the mansions, cars, clothes and fame, ALL of these things are temporal (temporary).

Matthew 6:19-21 AMP

v19 - "Do not store up for yourselves [material] treasures on the earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

v20 - But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal;

v21 - for where your treasure is, there your heart [your wishes, your desires; that on which your life centers] will be also.

Now why should we follow God's will for our lives? God's will is perfect and pre-destined!

Psalm 18:30 NLT

"God’s way is perfect. All the Lord ’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection."

Jeremiah 29:11 KJV

"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end."

So, how do we live according to God's will?

In order to walk fully in His Will, we must surrender our lives to Him. We accomplish this by making Jesus Christ, our Lord AND Savior. By making Jesus our Lord, we are giving Him Lordship over our lives. Christ claims authority over believers and unbelievers; however, the difference is that believers acknowledge and submit to His authority with joy for the salvation we have received in Him.

Matthew 28:18 NLT

"Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth."

We must abandon our way and doing what we feel because it will surely lead to a path of destruction and eternal separation from God.

Will you continue to let your life be ruled by your feelings?

Or will you surrender to God's plan for your life?

If you're tired of chasing the things of this world which are temporal and living a lifestyle that will eventually lead to destruction, I extend the invitation to salvation to you:

You can begin with this prayer:

God, I know that I am a sinner and I need a Savior.

I want to turn away from my sinful life and to the life You have planned for me.

Please forgive me of my sins.

Cleanse me of my past and make me a new creation in You.

I know Your Son, Jesus Christ, died for me and I believe in my heart that You raised Him from the dead.

At this very moment, I accept, confess, and proclaim Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior to live in my heart from this day forward.

Thank you God for the grace that has saved me from my sins and given me eternal life.

Please send your Holy Spirit to dwell in me, to renew my mind and to guide me for the rest of my life.

In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen!

If you've prayed this prayer with sincerity, you are now a new creature in Christ!
